The
project arose as an emergency response to our client’s
request following a chemical fire.
Trained operatives were immediately deployed,
along with specialist plant, to carry out on the spot assessments
of structures including tracing of pipework and assessments
of existing storage tanks prior to the safe demolition and
removal of buildings which included plant items and clean
up operations in a highly volatile area.
The work had to be executed around a partially
burnt out road tanker, which contained a large quantity
of highly flammable material, located within the part burnt
out, structurally unsafe building.
Extreme caution was exercised as the work
proceeded to take into account the safety of the remainder
of the manufacturing site, which continued production, it’s
occupants and road users.
The work on site was co-ordinated by Albright & Wilson
personnel, the Health and Safety Executive and Connell Brothers
Ltd.
Due to the highly volatile and combustible
materials, specific Method Statements and Risk Assessments
had to be compiled on site by our on site Contracts Director
and Site Supervisor for every aspect of the project, to
enable the work to proceed safely and speedily. Permits
to work were issued prior to execution of the works. All
methodology had to be assessed, compiled and approved on
site.
The project included for licensed disposal
of various contaminants and materials to specialist tip
facilities.
The project was completed in November 1996
without incident or injury and to the satisfaction of Albright
& Wilson and the Health and Safety Executive (HSE).
