| Following
a rigorous pre-qualification procedure including audits
both on site and at our head office the company was officially
approved onto the Dow Chemicals Global Demolition Team.
Following a competitive tender process
we were awarded the contract for the demolition of the former
Mitchell Cotts facility located in Mirfield, West Yorkshire.
The site had previously conducted the batch manufacture
of active ingredients mainly for the pharmaceutical and
agrochemical industries
The site was bounded between two water
courses to the north and south. There was a railway line
situated to the south. Approximately half a mile to the
north were residential and commercial areas. In addition
to the south and west are industrial estates and to the
east, isolated houses. The work consisted of two distinct
phases
The Phase 1 decommissioning, cleaning
and isolation works to areas 5, 6, 8, 9 & 11 of the
Site comprises;
- The cleaning of various process vessels, tanks, reactors,
pipework and equipment;
- Disconnection, isolation and diversion of services;
- Minor structural alteration to enable separation of redundant
building sections;
- Selective dismantling and removal of redundant process
vessels, tanks, reactors, pipework and equipment; and
- The storage and the disposal of wastes arising from the
decommissioning activity.
The Phase 2 demolition comprised
of the following activities:
- Removal and disposal of cement bond asbestos;
- Dismantling for resale by Principal Contractor (as required),
redundant plant and equipment;
- Demolition to slab level of redundant buildings structures
with plant and equipment;
- Removal of the existing ground slabs and foundations;
- Removal of the terraced ground level to building 5;
- Excavation to formation level for civils works to demolition
areas;
- Tarmac demolition areas;
- Alteration of drainage to demolition areas; and
- Disposal of earthworks and demolition waste
Connell Bros also participated in the client
schemes where incentive was offered for the safe execution
of a project. The scheme was funded 50/50 by the client
and Connell Brothers (Dow Chemicals Demolition – Mirfield).
All operatives on site received their £100
bonus following the safe, incident-free completion of the
project.
