They have recently been decorated with the Gold Award from
The Royal Society for The Prevention of Accidents for the
third year in succession.
The award
was given to Connell Brothers as recognition of the past
four years work in the demolition sector carried out without
any incidents or accidents and was collected by Jim Connell
on May 10th at the Birmingham N.E.C as part of this years
Health and Safety EXPO.

Connell Brothers have also recently been given the National
Safety Award from The British Safety Council for the Eight
Consecutive Year.
RECENT CONTRACTS
De
- planting and demolition of the former Degussa Manox Facility
in East Manchester.
Connell Brothers are currently nearing
the completion of the de - planting and demolition of the
former Degussa Manox Facility in East Manchester. The majority
of the contents of the site were to be retained for re use
by the client and rebuilt in China.
The
site closed down in April 2005 and many local residents
were glad to see the end of what was considered a major
eye sore in the area. The clearance of the plant has also
enabled the potential regeneration of the approximate 40

Demolition
of the former Gold and Silver Refinery, Johnson Matthey
One of the most notable and original
contracts completed recently was the demolition of a former
Gold and Silver Buillion Refinery Building on behalf of
Johnson Matthey Plc.
Prior
to the Demolition the Operational activities within the
Gold and Silver Area comprised of Gold Refining, Gold Dissolution,
Silver Evaluation, and Silver Refining.
"Despite
the valiant attempts of our operatives no gold or silver
was found on site!" said Dave Wood, the site supervisor
for the works.

Demolition
of The Maths Tower, Manchester University
The unsightly design of the Maths
Tower situated on Oxford Road in the City Centre was said
to be based on that of a scale ruler and is the largest
to have ever been demolished in the city. The building was
earmarked for redevelopment following the merger last October
of the University of Manchester and UMIST to form a single
University.
The
Building stood at 21 storeys and is situated within the
confines of the live University Campus which is recognised
as the biggest institution in the country and the largest
in Europe with over 33,500 students. Coupled with this is
the fact the Tower Fronts onto one of the busiest roads
in the City Centre.

As part of
our continual development of The Health and Safety culture
within the company, Connell Brothers ran an in house competition
to find the safest employee - the winner being rewarded
£500. The competition proved a great success with
all of the Connell’s 60+ workforce scoring over 88%!
The prize was split eventually split between the companies
two eldest and longest serving employees Mr Joe Fay and
Mr Tony Clarke who have a combined demolition experience
in excess of over 80 years. (They have certainly seen some
changes in their time!).
DEMOLITION OF THE MATHS TOWER BEGINS
Connell Brothers have recently embarked on the demolition
of the 20 storey Maths Tower Building at Manchester University.
The structure is of a very unusual designe believed to have
been created to look like a scale rule! The site is not
only situated within the confines of a live university campus
with 30, 000 students in close residence, but coupled with
this is the fact the building fronts onto one of the busiest
roads in Manchester City Centre.

DEMOLITION OF WOODSIDE COMPLETE
Connell Brothers have recently completed the twelev
month contract for the demolition of Woodside Courts in Telford.
The Woodside Regeneration project was led
by the Borough of Telford and Wrekin in partnership with
The Wrekin Housing Trust, English Partnerships, Advantage
West Midlands and the Housing Corporation.
John Connell, Connell Brothers director
and current chairman of the North West Region of The National
Federation of Demolition Contractors said: “The
safety of local residents, children in the adjacent school
and the elderly residents in the Bennett House Residential
Home was of paramount importance to our company. The works
were programmed to take account of local conditions
and information leaflets have been made available at the
Woodside Project Office. The high profile project has required
a lot of detailed planning, including liaison with all parties
involved and members of the Royal Protection Squad Royal
visit of Prince Phillip who opened the job. We’re
delighted to be able to say that no accidents or incidents
were reported during demolition which allows us to maintain
our blemish-free record.”

Connell Brothers have recently achieved the Gold
Award from The Royal Society for the Prevention of Accidents
and were preseted with the accolade st the Birmingham NEC
by the Vice President of RoSPA Lord Brougham & Vaux
CBE. This refelcts Connell Brothers persistant high levels
of performance in the crucial area of Health and Safety
A HAT-TRICK OF YOUNG TRAINING SUCCESSES
It’s been a busy and successful
first half of the year for training within Connell Brothers
Ltd.
As part of the company’s continual
training programme in developing young members of the team
and their training skills, the company has scored a hat-trick
of successes.
James Flynn aged 18 is currently at the
National Construction College at Bircham Newton and doing
very nicely, placed at second in his class for plant operator
training.
Mike Finnigan aged 23, who studied at Liverpool
University and gained an Honours Degree in Business Economics,
is currently completing his graduate management-training
programme at Connell Brothers and is head office based.
As part of Mike’s training programme he has successfully
completed and passed his NEBOSH General Certificate in Health
& Safety.
Adam Balyski aged 18 has successfully completed
his NVQ level 2 Plant Mechanics Course at Bircham Newton
and is currently progressing on his level 3. As a keen rugby
league player Adam also gained honours by playing and collecting
a winners medal for St. Anne’s Amateur Rugby League
Club, in the Open Age, BARLA (British Amateur Rugby League
Association) National Cup Final held at Bloomfield Road
in Blackpool on Saturday 24th May 2003. Still on a high
and celebrating on his return to the end of year presentations
at St. Anne’s on Sunday he was awarded the Coaches
Player of the Year Award for his age group.

MAINE ROAD FOOTBALL GROUND
– THE DEMOLITION BEGINS
Connell brothers, award winning
demolition contractors have been commissioned by Manchester
City Council to demolish the former home of Manchester City
Football Club in order to make way for a multi-million pound
redevelopment scheme within the Moss Side Area.
Connell Brothers are well versed and experienced
in the field of Stadia Demolition following the successful
demolition of Filbert Street, the former home of Leicester
City F.C which was completed in the summer of 2003 accident
and incident free.
Connell Brothers expertise has been recognised
by numerous external bodies and as a result they have been
awarded the accolade of Demolition Contractor of the Year,
the only company in the North West to receive this award.
The complex project is a six month demolition
and asbestos removal package which presents numerous challenges
such as the adjacent terraced properties and St Edwards
R.C. school which is in close proximity. Liaison and planning
are key elements to the safe execution of the works and
Regular Residents meetings are being attended to reassure
the locals that Safety is of paramount importance to Connell
Brothers and will not be compromised in any fashion.
The demolition of the stands especially
the 30m high Kippax Street has required the utilising of
a variety of modern day demolition equipment including a
new state of the art high reach excavator equipped with
specialist hydraulic attachments. This Demolition Machine
reaches a staggering 41 metres and is the largest Demolition
Cat within the U.K reflecting Connell Brothers position
at the cutting edge of the industry. The machine will carry
out the dismantling of the structure in a controlled and
sequenced manner following a full structural appraisal by
Connell Brothers structural engineer.
During the course of the project Connell
Brothers will undertake a strict regime of Health, Safety
and Environmental auditing of the works with regular visits
from external advisors to ensure that it runs to programme
without accident or incident and maintains the companies
blemish free Health and Safety Record.
